E.mer.gence I & II, 2013
acrylic / ink on paper, 28 x 21 cm

Observing distant galaxies during artist residencies at Cerro Tololo in Chile and Kitt Peak in the USA inspired these one-second drawings that express the shortest time in which I can make a mark – the second – the base unit of time. The repeated actions in the random process of marking instigate a chance element within a measured and predetermined framework. Recalling John Latham’s least event/event-structure and Robert Morris’s blind time drawings, the work considers the tension between the temporal and atemporal, control and chance, seeing and not seeing.
